A dear friend and client wrote this after our first session.

At Trinity Wellness

During the massage, Laurie suggests that I write a poem
in the voice of my father, and I think What a great idea!

But Dad’s voice is even more elusive now than when he was alive, and I discover I don’t want to write another father poem after all,

yet here I am already several lines in, sinking into the quicksand of my boyhood. Get a grip! I say. Write what you need to write.

That’s how I bullshit myself into sacrificing art for self-expression, which at least gets me writing—pretending the two are somehow separate, pretending there is a way art might not express the self.

Now I’m skating on the thin ice of the vaguely philosophical,
a dangerous place for me, I know, full of clichés and shallow
thinking disguised as depth.

And as I sit here in the coffee shop
and write, green tea steaming from a paper cup, a man
in his sixties, dyed-blonde hair permed into tight curls,
keeps flashing smiles at the young girls in their tight tops.

How many people will I alienate if I admit I’m in a Starbucks,
that American example of the obsession to replicate
whatever generates even a shot-glass-full of financial success?

And that’s my cynical side, the sign I may not be one
of the open-hearted children of the New Age.

Yet I feel a wide and unconfined flood of compassion for my father, that silent trunk of a man who could not have known what to do with the misgivings moth-balled in the cedar chest
of his heart, much less with the doubts his own children
never dared to share with him.

And now the personal has fully overtaken this poem, and the workshop leaders who reside in the left side of my brain are telling me that my readers (What readers? I wonder), are asking So what?

and all I can answer is that yesterday as I lay on the table at Trinity Wellness,

Laurie massaged fragrant oils into my skin—and I have not been the same since.
